Dunkirk

HISTORY

Dunkirk plant, which occupies 27.7 hectares, started in June 1991 operations that have always been dedicated to the conversion of manganese ore into manganese sinter and alloys, ferromanganese mainly. After two changes of ownership, the plant, which operates the world’s largest manganese ferroalloys furnace, joined Ferroglobe in 2018. The combination of the furnace size and of a high level of automation of operations control makes it ranking among the best in terms of productivity level per employee. The local management is fully committed on the one hand to protect the health and safety of all the people working on the site, and on the other hand to optimize the consumption of raw material and energy. Operations are run in compliance with environmental regulation and the Best Available Technologies have been implemented over the last years to reduce the plant environmental footprint.

PLANT FACILITIES
  • One 102 MVA closed electric arc furnace (freeze-lining technology) for the production of FeMn
  • One 350,000 tpy sinter plant (equipped with a baghouse and electrostatic filters)
  • One crushing and screening facility (80 t/h capacity)
  • 2 gas scrubbers and a water treatment plant with two automatic press filters
LOCATION
 

The plant is located in the industrial suburb of Dunkirk, in the Hauts-de-France region, at about 75km west of Lille and 300km north of Paris.

It benefits from the very proximity (less than 1km) to a deep water port and to Western Europe´s largest and most competitive steel plants, as well as favorable (motorways and river) logistic infrastructure, both inbound and outbound.

The closest airports are Lille-Lesquin, Brussels-Zaventem and Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle.
