Esmeralda
Cuarzos Industriales, S.A., subsidiary to Ferroglobe PLC, started the mining operation in Esmeralda Mine in 1998, after carrying out a proper mining research that laid the groundwork for a draft of the reopening of the mining operation, which had been abandoned by their former owners.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MINING OPERATION
- The operation method used in mine consists in clearing coating materials from the roof of the vein located, to allow access to quartz. The quartz mineral extraction is done by drilling and blasting, loading the material flown with backhoe and transporting it by truck to the treatment plant located in Cabaleiros-Tordoia.
- The treatment plant processes the material for the manufacture of silicon metal and ferroalloys and the material that does not meet the chemical specifications or appropriate particle size and is used in the local industry as aggregates.

LOCATION
Esmeralda Mine is situated in the Municipality of Trazo, La Coruña Province, at a distance of 17 km from Santiago de Compostela, where the nearest airport is located.
The treatment plant can be accessed by taking the road CP-5902 in “Pontepedra”
